The project was completed in 2020 with Xing Xiao. Formed as a virtual space in computer games, this project uses facial recognition algorithms, and can be displayed via projection, screen, VR, and other media. Using Simonides of Ceos’s method of “memory palace” as a reference, this project reconstructs the space where one of the authors lived in 1997 through tracing specific objects. In addition, we made a crawler software to collect relevant pictures from the same year on the Internet, and put them together with the author's living space into an imaginary southern river in the early 1990s. Over time, these historical pictures slowly sink to the bottom of the river, witnessing the memories of countless people along with the river. Here, personal memory and Internet collective memory are intertwined. In our game space, virtual characters observe the viewer through a camera whose angle is adjusted according to the viewer’s position. The viewer and the characters in the virtual space gaze at each other, while the identities of the viewer and the watched make reference to each other, all entangled.

《遗忘宫殿》是 Xiyue Hu 和Xing Xiao于2020年合作的作品,创作于疫情期间。形式为游戏虚拟空间。 一方面,作品以Simonides of Ceos的“记忆宫殿”方法为参照,通过对具体物品的追溯,重新构建了其中一位作者在1997年间生活的空间。 另一方面,我们制作了一个爬虫软件对互联网上同年的相关图片进行搜集,将其连同作者 的生活空间一并放置于上世纪90年代初的一条想象中的南方河流。这些历史图片随着时间缓缓沉入江底,与河流一同见证着 无数人的记忆,在这里,个人记忆与互联网集体记忆(Internet collective memory)相互交织。我们希望以集体-个体化的关系为线索,探索关于个人记忆与作为外置记忆(exosomatic memory)的互联网集体记忆之间可能存在的联系。 互联网在其协议层缺乏对数据储存的明确定义(无状态协议stateless protocol),因而处于一种“失忆状态”。环绕这一状况,搜索引擎,数据中心,区块链以及去中心化储存协议展开角逐,以争夺构建集体记忆的能力。 在我们的游戏空间中虚拟人物会通过摄像头观察观众,通过观众的位置调整镜头观看的角度,观众和虚拟空间中的人物相互凝视,观者与被观看者的身份似乎相互指涉,纠缠在一起。
